Second Circular and final call for abstracts, International Workshop of Experts on Health and Human Well-being in Africa (Pretoria, South Africa 25-27 August 2008)
Kindly receive the second circular and final call for abstracts for the International workshop of experts on Health and Human Well-being in Africa. The workshop is organised by ICSU ROA, in collaboration with the National Research Foundation (NRF) of South Africa, and it will take place on 25 – 27 August 2008 in Pretoria, South Africa. The purpose of this workshop is bringing together experts on issues of health and well-being to kick-start the preparation of large-scale, long-term and high-quality project proposals from the science plan (published on this website and hard copies available on request). ICSU-TWAS-UNESCO-UNU/IAS Visiting science programme open for applications
The ICSU-TWAS-UNESCO-UNU/IAS Visiting science programme supports visits of internationally renowned scientists to institutions located in developing countries, especially those located in the least developed countries. The objective of the programme is to provide institutions and research groups in developing countries, especially those with limited outside contacts, with the opportunity to establish long-term links with world leaders in science and so help develop capacity-building in their country. 7th AARSE Conference
The African Association of remote sensing of the Environment (AARSE) was formed in 1992 in the USA, and is a registered regional member of the international society for photogrammetry and remote sensing (ISPRS) since 1994 it has been an organizational member of GEOSS. The 7th AARSE conference will be held in Accra, Ghana from 27-31 October 2008. Preparation for the First Circular of the ICSU General Assembly
The ICSU Regional Office for Africa is collating information for the preparation of the First Circular of the ICSU General Assembly which will be held for the first time ever, in the Sub-Saharan Africa, in Maputo (Mozambique in October 2008). The previous deadline of 15 June 2007 has expired and we would like to kindly make a final call for your action before moving ahead with the preparations.
- A-Part 1: 13-17 October 2008: Pre-GA program: Are you interested in being invited to visit one of the 10 Mozambican provinces and take part in the S&T activities there? If yes, please go through the attachment and indicate your preference. Make direct correspondence to AICIMO and Prof Lopo Vasconcelos.
- B-Part II: 20 October 2008: Do you want to take part in the "Science Day in Africa" symposium on Monday, 20 October 2008? If yes, register your name to the same persons mentioned above.
- C- Part III: 21-24 October 2008: this is an exclusive meeting for the ICSU delegates only.
- D-Part III: 25-31 October 2008 or longer: Do you want to take part in the post-GA program – science expeditions and tourism? If yes, kindly wait till when the offers come from Cameroon, Kenya, Madagascar, Mauritius, Mozambique (tourism only), Seychelles, South Africa, Tanzania and Zimbabwe. They will appear in the 1st Circular of the ICSU GA.
- E- BOOK written by African scientists, engineers and technologists: STI Success Stories from Africa. In showing the importance of STI in Africa and for the promotion of the science education and its relevance to society and policy making processes, a special volume, with few convincing chapters will be published by August 2008 and be presented to the ICSU GA as a testimony for the importance of STI in Africa. All those interested to contributing a chapter should contact Sospeter Muhongo.

The outline of the project proposals on Sustainable Energy in Africa is now available. ICSU ROA is now on the march towards the implementation of its 4 science plans. This will be done in collaboration with several national, regional and international partners. Interested persons, their organizations/institutions and companies are encouraged to get involved in the implementation of these 2 mega projects in Africa – (a) Energy Models and Scenarios for Africa and (b) Biofuels for Africa.
