ICSU Regional Committee for Africa 

Chairman: Prof Gabriel Ogunmola (2005-7) 

Prof Ogunmola is the Executive Director, Science and Technology Development Foundation Ibadan, Nigeria. His research interests include Biophysical Chemistry; Structure function Relationship in Macromolecules, Protein and DNA, Chemistry, Molecular Pathology of Hemoglobins and Enzymenopathies. He is a member of several national and international organisations including the Network of African Science Academies (NASAC).

Member: Dr Khotso Mokhele (2005-7) 

Dr Mokhele is the President of the National Research Foundation and the Academy of Science of SA. He is Acting President of the General Committee of the International Council for Science (ICSU). Dr Mokhele served on the UNESCO Board from 1997 to 2001. He has been a lecturer and has worked as an analytical Chemist for the private sector. He has received five honorary doctorates and is a Member of the Legion of Honour (chevalier), Republic of France 2000.

Member: Prof Francis Gudyanga (2005-7)  
Prof Gudyanga has a doctorate in Mineral Technologyfrom the Royal School of Mines, Imperial College, University of London. He has been Chairman of the Research Council of Zimbabwe; Member of the Executive Board of ICSU; Member of ICSU's Standing Committee on the Freedom in the Conduct of Science; Secretary General of the Zimbabwe Academy of Sciences and Dean of the Faculty of Engineering, University of Zimbabwe. He served as Deputy Director General, Scientific and Industrial Research and Development Centre, 2000 - 2003. His professional expertise is teaching and research in Extractive Metallurgy and Electrochemical Engineering.

Ex Officio: Prof Thomas Rosswall  

Thomas Rosswall has been instrumental in the development of microbial ecology, both nationally and internationally. His leadership in three major ecosystem projects has been important not only for ecosystem sciences in Sweden, but also for the development of international networks, which have fostered intensive collaboration between scientists in many countries. He has been Director of the International Foundation for Science (IFS), Rector (President) of the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences, Director of the International START Secretariat, Executive Director of the International Geosphere-Biosphere Programme (IGBP) and Professor of Water in Nature and Society at the Universities of Stockholm and Linköping, Sweden. He has also served on numerous international and national committees and boards. He is an elected member of five learned societies including the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences, Academia Europaea and the Third World Academy of Sciences.

Director: Prof Sospeter Muhongo

Prof Muhongo, is the first recipient (2004) of the Robert Shackleton Award for Outstanding Research in the Precambrian Geology of Africa. He has been teaching and doing research at the University of Dar Es Salaam in Tanzania since 1979. His research interests are in tectonics, structural geology, petrology, geochronology and economic geology of Precambrian terrains. Prof Muhongo has held key positions in numerous national and international organisations. He is a Fellow of the Geological Society of Africa (GSAf), Third World Academy of Sciences (TWAS), the Gondwana Institute for Geology and Environment (GIGE, Japan) as well as the Geological Society of London (GSL). In his own country, he has been chair of the Board of Directors of the State Mining Corporation (STAMICO) and was Head of Geology at the University of Dar Es Salaam in 1997-2000. He is the author or co-author of over 100 scientific articles and technical papers.
